EP 019: Wellness | Music | Next Steps – A Conversation with Joe Dockery

Show Notes:

Hi all,  Today’s guest is Joe Dockery.  Joe and I have never officially met, but I was introduced to him by my Mom who worked with him earlier this year as part of a successful musical production that Joe created and produced in my hometown of Saranac Lake, New York.  He seemed a prime candidate to be a guest on The Workbench, so I asked him to join me for a conversation and he was game. We had a great time!  Joe has had a full career as a Chiropractor, and music has also played a huge part in his life.  He now finds himself at a crossroads, getting ready for his next steps in life, which include a move back to Virginia and some other exciting plans that we’ll discuss in today’s conversation.  What I loved about our talk is Joe’s willingness to take risks, to continue his growth in thinking about wellness and health as well as his creative endeavors.  This is so much a part of our work at the Workbench – to be willing to take risks and pursue our ideas – to keep growing.  The conversation touches on many different topics, including his upbringing, schooling, development as a musician, and an interesting story about the path that led him back to his wife.  Don’t forget to check out the show notes for links to his website and for the songs we include for The Workbench Playlist.  Sending out love and light – I hope you enjoy!

In this episode we discuss

  • Joe’s family background, his early years and growing up.  His  “interesting spot in the lineup” within the Dockery clan; and how siblings can be “raised by different parents.”
  • His vocation and avocation, and how he has found his way to make a lifelong impact in both areas.
  • How answering an advertisement in the paper changed the trajectory of his life.
  • His civic contributions as a music promoter; and the music productions that he brought to fruition.
  • The power of music to act as a friend when you need a friend; Joni Mitchell lyrics, and how a song early in life made him realize the emotional power that music can hold and the development of empathy within.
  • Health and wellness:  the importance of food on health, appreciating the pause, and slowing things down.
  • The importance of movement in continued health, why “motion is lotion” – not only for the joints, but for the brain.
  • What’s next in his life:  health, wellness, and more music.
