Or, How to Decide Which Ideas to Pursue.
Yesterday, I was walking around Moody Pond with two of my all-time favorite women, and we were talking about inklings – those ideas that pop into your mind and intrigue you. Maybe it’s a trip abroad, or a new class or interest. Maybe it’s an idea for a new business or for solving a challenge at work.
Resources and Trade-Offs
Resources (time, energy, money) are often limited. To pursue one idea means that you aren’t pursuing another in that moment. Trade-offs must be made; the inklings prioritized. For many of us, the question is: just how do you decide which inkling to pursue?
From this conversation bloomed this idea: Pay attention to the persistent inkling or idea – the one you have not been able to shake, the one that you keep putting off, the one that continues to resurface.
Pitch or Pilot
Now, we can’t go galivanting off in pursuit of all our ideas, (or can we…?) but we should give the persistent ones some air and attention. Explore. Dip your toe in the water. See where it leads. Your inkling might lead to an idea that just might unlock joy, fulfillment or growth – in yourself, your family, or your work. Pitch it to your people or pilot the idea quietly and responsibly. This is what it means to find and listen to your voice. Trust that your ideas are good ones.
What inkling or idea should you begin exploring?
