EP 11: The Crucible

Show Notes

Happy New Year All…and welcome to the first episode of The Workbench for 2020!

I’m so excited to be back – I’ve spent the past several weeks thinking about what I want to build and create in 2020, and am looking forward to sharing more great ideas, inspiration and tools for your projects – big or small.

Shout out:

Today’s shout-out and gratitude moment is to my Meme, Grandma Rose, who was born on this date in 1903. She was many things to me and our family, including an incredible and creative seamstress, a wonderful storyteller, a patient teacher, a great canasta and scrabble player, and Baker – both in name and in practice. Many of my best cooking memories are in her kitchen, and these experiences were part of what led me to pursue my early culinary career. She is often still on my mind whenever I bake.

Today’s topic:

Today, we talk about my personal crucible – the elements that were part of this time period, some of the lessons learned, and recommendations for things we can do when times are really tough. We also talk about embracing the idea of paradox, and thinking in terms of both/and; rather than either/or.

Crucible Defined:

Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines a crucible as

  1. A vessel used for melting a substance that requires a high degree of heat
  2. A severe test
  3. A place or situation in which concentrated forces interact to cause or influence change or development.

Synonyms for crucible include cross, fire, gauntlet, ordeal and trial.

In the next episode, I’ll share the story of the rebuilding that took place. And check out the show notes for a few resources that helped me through our crucible. I’m excited to share my story, but also stories from others, and conversations about the work that goes into to the building of our lives. There is so much more great content in the works!

And before I leave you today…I’d like to shout out to everyone who saw me through our Crucible – you know who you are. Ever grateful for each and every kind word, insight, box of Kleenex, phone call, book recommendation, kick in the pants, and hug. I could not have done this without you.

Join us in two weeks for the next episode…and in the meantime, keep building and creating….all you have to do is just take that very next step!
